Postcards From The Edge

Back On Tack Archive

The entrance is clearly marked at Bun Boy in Baker, California. Perverse jokes about the restaurant's name can be inserted as the reader sees fit.

Bun Boy came into operation when the Failing family opened it in 1926. The postcard above shows the Failing business going strong in the 1950s. Since that time, the building has undergone some renovations, but is still holding its ground.

The feeding hole sits along Interstate 15 in a town self-proclaimed as the "Gateway to Death Valley." They cater to a clientele of mostly truckers and hung over characters making the 235-mile trek between Vegas and Los Angeles. The meal portions are huge but not big enough to top the centerpiece outside.

Postcards from the Edge showcases mail greetings pulled from Back on Tack's roadside archive. A different card is featured each month.
Not pictured in the postcard is "The World's Tallest Thermometer" which now sticks out of Bun Boy's parking lot. It stands at 135-feet tall to mark the highest recorded degree temperature ever set in Death Valley.
