Bumper To Bumper Chicken

A metal cow is set out to pasture.
As 231 snakes its way through the center of Alabama, the roadside is littered with odd objects. It is primarily farmland but even farmland can be ornate with just the right amount of lawn sculptures.

I start to wonder where these strange creatures originate from. Further up the road I form a theory that their ancestry may be traced to a shack in Brundridge called Art Wurks.

Strewn across a small hill is an automotive zoo. Old car parts and farm equipment are reincarnated into larger than life beings. Stick figure men made from bent wire keep a watchful eye on the place. The sun intensely reflects off the plumage of a chrome chicken whose body has been molded out of car bumpers. A fish that would be the wet dream of most anglers is rolled out to dry.

Art Wurks is said to be run by a New York City artist who returned to his hometown to work with his brother on the folksy creations. Obviously he was not interested in the high brow atmosphere New York had to offer.

That is the beauty of roadside art, it can be appreciated unpretentiously.
